Bioengineering College of Chongqing University
Bioengineering College of Chongqing University was founded in 1998, evolved from the first biomechanics laboratory in China and the biomedical electronics laboratory, both established in the late 1970's. There are multiple departments, institutes, and research centers now within the College including Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, Weiduo Institute of Bioengineering, Institute of Biomedical Electronics, Institute of Agricultural Bioengineering, Genetic Engineering Research Center, and Applied Bio-tech Research Center.
As a nationally acclaimed institution for bioengineering education and research, the College has a talented multidisciplinary faculty with strong staff support and well-equipped laboratory facilities. It is funded under the auspices of the very selective state-wide “211 project”, “985 project”, and the newly introduced “111 program”, positioning it as a major force in the field. There are advanced laboratories for biomechanics and tissue engineering, gene engineering, cell culture , biomaterials, molecular biology, electronics and imaging, mechanobiology of plant, and blood rheology,. So far, it is authorized by the State to confer doctoral degrees in one primary discipline (Biomedical Engineering), and 5 secondary disciplines, master's degrees in 3 primary discipline covering 23 secondary disciplines, as well as one key laboratory at provincial level. It is also authorized by the State to offer post-doctoral training. The faculty includes 49 full/ associate professors, among those >80 % are doctorate, 17 are eligible for supervising doctoral students, and most have international experience in research via study, work, or collaboration. Current enrolment of students includes 520 undergraduates majoring in either biomechanics or biomedical engineering, and 459 doctoral and master's degree candidates.
During the five fiscal years period of 2000-2005, the College has successfully secured 194 grants in total, among which 34 (~20% of total) are funded by the major national funding agencies such as “973 Project”, “863 Project”, Natural Science Foundation of China etc.. Through collaborations and scientific exchanges including students' exchange, the College has built a long-term relationship with many foreign institute across USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, and Japan. In 2005, it has successfully organized the 12 th International Congress of Biorheology and the 5 th International Conference on Clinical Hemorheology that was held in Chongqing.
Remarkable as it has been, the College is striving to become an international power-house in both scientific discovery and technology innovation in biological and biomedical engineering.
